“You were listening?” Hope asked with a raised eyebrow.

“I was politely not interrupting, and yeah, I happened to hear some things. It wasn’t as if I came here to eavesdrop.”

“Then, you know I’ll do what I can. But I’m not changing my routine to accommodate the investigation. I don’t have a dog in that hunt, to quote someone I can’t remember.”

“Good. I want to investigate with you.”

“Cori, you are not in the detective business. Neither am I. So, we’ll simply listen to what the police tell us and form opinions. We’re not going hunting.”

“You’re not even going out to the scene of the crime? How do you expect to solve the case if you don’t look at the cabin?”

“I don’t expect to solve the case. I expect the police to catch the killer, if there is one. More than likely, Tanson Miller was killed by a stray bullet.”

“Agreed, but we need to visit the crime scene. You know, find some trace evidence or something. At least, see where someone might have been standing when the gun went off.”

“Let the professionals find the trace evidence and process it. You know that even if we found something, we’d have to turn it over to the people who can do something with it.”

“You’re no fun.”

Hope cocked her head. “And you’re always looking for a way to get out of doing your schoolwork.”

“I always do my homework.”

“Yes, but you like to delay it to the last minute.”

“That’s just the way I am. My work always gets done and I get good grades. And anyway, isn’t there some Asian proverb that says the nail that sticks up gets the hammer.”

“It’s Japanese, I think, and yes, that does make sense. But even if you’re hammered back into place, you can still stand out—if that makes sense.”

“Not much.”

“You know what I mean. You can be a different kind of nail, and that might be a good thing.”

“I’m no expert on nails, but I’m guessing there aren’t that many different types.”

“More than you think. But, don’t jump around the metaphor. You don’t have to act out to stand out. How’s that for a phrase?” Hope smiled.

“I’m not sure. It seems to me that most of the people who trend online act out all the time. I mean, they all seem to have sort of gimmick.”

“They do, because they need to be noticed. In a shrinking world, where you find talent everywhere, people want to have a way to draw attention to themselves. Like at school, some students act out simply to get someone to notice them.”

“Don’t I know that. It’s mostly boys. They’re like babies. They need all the attention, all the time.”

“Girls do, too. And attention isn’t bad, as long as it’s not for a bad thing. And, it’s time to go home.”

“Or to that cabin.” Cori grinned.

“Not today. Homework, dinner, homework.”

Cori threw up her hands. “I can’t do homework twenty-four hours a day.”

“You’ve never even tried.” Hope laughed. “Come along, dear daughter, and don’t pout.”

“I never pout.
